Congratulations to our 2022 Youth of the Year Jalissa & Junior Youth of the Year Malachi L! Both youth are members of our Barreto Club. Jalissa will represent the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs at the Boys & Girls Clubs Illinois Youth of the Year competition, to be held virtually April 12th.
Jalissa has been participating in programs such as Power Hour, Smart Girls, Torch Club and Keystone for 12 years. She has accumulated over 1,030 service hours so far and aspires to have a career in the medical field. In addition to supporting her peers and presiding as President of Keystone Club, Jalissa has accepted a role as the latest Development Professional at ULBGC’s Chopin site.
Malachi has been a member of Barreto for 6 years and participates in Passport to Manhood, Torch Club, Science Club and Smart Moves. He aspires to be a professional basketball player, but if he had to choose a plan B, he would be a police officer. Malachi participates in programs that incorporate leadership, education, service and arts. He enjoys talking to his friends about doing what’s right to better themselves.
Each year, one exceptional Club member is selected to be the National Youth of the Year, serving as an ambassador for Boys & Girls Club youth as well as a voice for all of our nation’s young people. Thousands of Boys & Girls Club teens participate in local, state and regional Youth of the Year events. Six teens, including five regional winners and a national military youth winner, advance to the National Youth of the Year Celebration, taking place October 13, when one outstanding young person is named Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s national teen spokesperson. If she wins, Jalissa will be in good company! In 2020, a fellow Union League Boys & Girls Clubs member, Tiana J., won the Illinois Youth of the Year Award!
We invite you to join us in congratulating Jalissa and Malachi and wishing Jalissa luck for the big state event on April 12th!
