Our 2021 Youth of the Year, Afif N., will represent the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs at the Boys & Girls Clubs Illinois Youth of the Year competition, to be held virtually April 21st. Afif, aged 16, is a member of our Club One, based in Pilsen, in which he’s been an active member since 2015.
If selected as the Illinois Youth of the Year on the 21st , he will advance to the Midwest/regional and then national competitions. Each year, thousands of Boys & Girls Club teens participate in local, state and regional Youth of the Year events. Six teens, including five regional winners and a national military youth winner, advance to the National Youth of the Year Celebration, taking place Sept. 21, where one outstanding young person is named Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s national teen spokesperson. If he wins, Afif will be in good company; in 2020, a fellow Union League Boys & Girls Clubs member, Tiana J., won the Illinois Youth of the Year Award!
“Club One has tremendously impacted me to be the person I am today. Through joining different programs, I have explored my interests and passions and have gained mentors along the way. When I first joined the Club, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. But now that I’ve the opportunity to grow as a person through the programs I’ve participated in, I have a much better vision for what my future holds and a village to support me at Club One. As the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year nominee, I realized that I am much more capable than I thought I was. This experience has given me so much confidence in myself and has helped me realize the potential I have,” said Afif.
Union League Boys & Girls Clubs President, Mary Ann Mahon Huels, shared, ‘We are tremendously proud of our 2021 Union League Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year, Afif! He has continued to wow us with his poise and strength of character. Afif has shared with us how significant the sense of community at our Clubs is to him, referring to his Club as a “village”. Afif truly exemplifies the power and unity of that community, that “village”, our Union League Boys & Girls Clubs. We are honored to have him represent us at the Illinois
Youth of the Year Ceremony later this month and are excited to celebrate his continued achievements.’
We invite you to join us in congratulating Afif and wishing him luck for the big state event on April 21st by emailing us your message of support to him at firstname.lastname@example.org [please make email subject read “Message for Afif”].
